From February 10 to 15, 2020, I attended this training conducted by the Zoological Society (ZSL) – Philippines. The participants were mostly local government staff and NGO staff. I think I was the only one from the academe.

Session Title: Fostering U-INSPIRE Alliance – Asia and the Pacific Youth and Young Professionals in Science, Engineering, Technology, and Innovation for DRR

As President of U-INSPIRE Philippines, I shared in the session organized by UNESCO Office Jakarta on November 11, 2019 at the Sendai International Center the establishment and the past, current, and future activities of our young organization. U-INSPIRE is the new Asian platform for youth participation and leadership in disaster risk reduction.

2019 IDMR Meeting with Research Collaborators in the Philippines

Between September 30 and October 4, 2019, Prof. Gretchen Kalonji, Dean of IDMR, and I met with current and potential research collaborators in the Philippines: (1) Manila Observatory, Ateneo de Manila University; (2) University of the Philippines Resilience Institute; and Mindanao Center for Resiliency, Mindanao State University – Iligan Institute of Technology.

2019 Train the Trainers Course on Science Diplomacy

Organized by the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) and The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS). The workshop was held from August 26 to 28, 2019 at the International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP) in Trieste, Italy.

2015 HOPE Meeting with Nobel Laureates, Tokyo, Japan, March 1-5, 2015

I was one of two representatives from the Philippines and one of the very few who attended the 7th HOPE Meeting coming from a social science background. I was awestruck meeting Nobel Prize winners up close! A pity I wasn’t able to have a photo with Prof. Dan Shechtman. He was one of my favorites.

2013 Fundraising for Post-Typhoon Haiyan Reconstruction, Kyoto City

I was President of the Kyoto Association of Pinoy Scholars (KAPS) when we collected donations for post-Typhoon Haiyan reconstruction. We were able to collect 728,932 yen (350,000 pesos), which we then remitted to the Leyte and Bohol chapters of Philippine Red Cross.

2013 Kyoto City Comprehensive Disaster Drill

While I was still living in Kyoto, I regularly joined the annual disaster drills. The Kyoto City International Foundation (KCIF) invites foreigners to participate in the disaster preparedness initiatives of the city. As former president of the Kyoto Association of Pinoy Scholars, I always encouraged our members to be engaged in this kind of non-formal DRR education.

2013 Expert Consultation on Developing Guidelines on Climate Change Education at UNESCO Headquarters, Paris, France

My labmates and I were invited to be observers at the expert consultation. Each of us wrote a country report which was used as one of the bases for the guidelines on climate change education.

2010 UNESCO-MoET-ASEM Lifelong Learning Forum, Hanoi, Vietnam

I did a two-month internship at the UNESCO Hanoi Office. One of my tasks was to assist in the documentation of the Lifelong Learning Forum.
